Academic and Linguistic Demands: Creating Access to the Next Generation Learning Standards in English Language Arts for Linguistically Diverse Learners (ALDs)
In September 2017, the New York State Board of Regents adopted the newly revised The New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards (Revised 2017) (NGLS) as part of the strategy to continually improve the learning standards that guide education for all students in New York State. The Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages endeavored to create a set of tools to accompany the newly adopted NGLS. This document, theÌýAcademic and Linguistic Demands: Creating Access to the Next Generation Learning Standards in English Language Arts for Linguistically Diverse Learners (ALDs), is a result of that endeavor.Ìý
This set of tools helps teachers identify the words, phrases, and language structures embedded in the English Language Arts standards so that they are able to provide standards-aligned, grade-level instruction to English Language Learners.
The purpose of this document is to provide a linguistic perspective from which teachers can examine the NGLS, building their capacity to recognize the types of words, phrases, and structures present in the lessons they are planning that are necessary for ELLs to achieve grade-level success.
