School and District Accountability Resources and Data
The following is a collection of resources and data related to New York State's accountability system under the federally approved Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which was signed by President Obama in 2015.听 The system has been in place since the 2018-19 school year.听 Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States Education Department approved a two-year pause in accountability determinations for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years. The accountability system restarted in the 2022-23 school year based on 2021-22 school year results.听Contact听accountinfo@nysed.gov听for any questions or to locate resources and data not provided here.

Reimagine Phase
Amendments to the New York State accountability system under ESSA were approved by the United States Education Department on January 8, 2025. This phase of the accountability system, the Reimagine Phase, begins in the 2025-26 school year based on 2024-25 school year results. Resources explaining the accountability system for the elementary/middle (EM) and high school (HS) levels for this phase are available below. 2021-22 School Year Resources
The following materials were developed in 2022 in preparation for restarting the ESSA accountability system for the 2022-23 school year.听 These resources were provided, some in draft form, to inform stakeholders and to seek stakeholder input.听 The final, approved full text of the听ESSA Accountability State Plan Addendum and USDE approval letter of the addendum can be found here.听
