Commissioner’s Appointees to School Districts in Need

New York State Law 211-C authorizes the Commissioner to implement a Distinguished Educator Program to assist low performing districts and schools within such districts that failed to make adequate yearly progress (AYP) for four or more years. Distinguished Educators are appointed to districts and schools that are experiencing extremely serious academic challenges and ensure the appointment of qualified individuals to assist these districts and schools to improve educational outcomes.

New York State Education Law requires the Commissioner of Education to appoint State Monitors to the East Ramapo CSD, Hempstead UFSD, Rochester CSD and Wyandanch UFSD school districts. In general, the monitors are responsible for fiscal oversight of the districts, and in the case of East Ramapo CSD, Hempstead UFSD, and Rochester CSD, the Monitors are also responsible for academic oversight.
